Mahjong Solitaire tips for beginners
- Open the upper layers to reveal more choices.
- Free long rows before matching easy pairs elsewhere.
- Look at all four copies of a tile before choosing a pair.
- Prioritize a match that frees another useful tile.
- If no matches remain, try Undo before Shuffle.
Compare what each pair unlocks
Suppose three matching tiles are free. One sits on top of another tile; the other two sit on the outer edge with nothing beneath them. Pairing the upper tile with an edge tile reveals a new face. Pairing only the edge tiles does not. Compare the side openings too before choosing: revealing a tile helps, but does not guarantee a win.

Mahjong Solitaire is a single-player tile matching puzzle, distinct from traditional multiplayer Mahjong. Every new deal here is constructed with a complete solution. Your choices still matter: one matching pair can open the board, while another can leave you with no matches. There is no time limit, and hints, undo and shuffle are unlimited.

Is Mahjong Solitaire the same as Mahjong?
No. This is a single-player matching puzzle. Traditional Mahjong is usually played by four people with different rules.
Is it free, and do I need to download anything?
It is free to play in your browser without a download or account.
Which tiles can I remove?
A tile must have nothing overlapping it above, and at least one open side: left or right.
Do flowers and seasons need identical pictures?
No. Any two flowers match, and any two seasons match. A flower cannot match a season.
Are all new deals solvable?
Yes. Each new deal is constructed with a complete legal solution. Choosing a different sequence can still lead to no available matches.
Can I play on my phone?
Yes. Tap tiles to select them. The full layout fits the screen; enlarge it and drag for a closer look.
Is my game saved?
Your current deal, undo history and records are saved in this browser when storage is available. They also stay with you when switching languages.
Is there a time limit?
No. The clock records your playing time; it is not a countdown and does not end your game.
What do Hint, Undo and Shuffle do?
Hint highlights an available pair. Undo reverses your last match or shuffle. Shuffle rearranges the remaining tiles. All three are unlimited; a hint does not guarantee the best route to a win.
How can I make the tiles larger?
Use Enlarge tiles on the board, then drag to explore it. Fit board restores the full view. You can also use Fullscreen.
Which layout is best for beginners?
Try Easy, with 72 tiles instead of the classic Turtle’s 144. The matching rules are the same, and hints and undo are available.
Does progress sync between devices?
No. Progress and records stay in this browser when storage is available. Changing languages keeps them; clearing browser data removes them.
